Arkansas AG Sues E-Commerce Site Temu for Allegedly Deceiving Customers, Violating Privacy

ARKANSAS — The attorney general of Arkansas has sued e-commerce site Temu, alleging the company engages in deceptive trade activities and violates customers’ privacy rights.

Attorney General Tim Griffin described Temu as a “data-theft business,” asserting the company breaches customers’ phones to make money off the unauthorized collection of personal data.

Temu did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment from River Mississippi News on Wednesday.

The company’s website states Temu was founded in Boston, Massachusetts three years ago and aims to improve the lives of millions of people through affordable products.

But Griffin charges Temu violated the Arkansas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and the Arkansas Personal Information Protection Act.

Griffin says Temu differs from other online marketplaces such as Walmart and Amazon. In fact, Griffin in a Tuesday news release from his office described Temu as “functionally malware and spyware.”

Arkansas’ challenge against Temu is the first state lawsuit against the company for “deceptive trade practices,” the release adds.

The suit seeks to stop Temu’s current business practices and requests unspecified monetary relief.
