KENTUCKY — A Kentucky dentist, whose clinic was just across the state line from Cincinnati, Ohio, will spend 20 years in prison for overly prescribing powerful narcotics to a patient who fatally overdosed on morphine, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday.

Dr. Jay M. Sadrinia went on trial for the death of the patient, and prosecutors showed that the Crescent Springs, Kentucky dentist prescribed potent opioids for routine procedures even though they suffered from substance abuse disorder, a news release states.

In fact, Sadrinia’s own charts he kept on some patients noted that they were vulnerable to drug abuse, it adds. One of the patients died of a morphine overdose after being illegally prescribed the drug by Sadrinia, the press release says.

The patient who died of the morphine overdose was charged $37,000 for dental work and prescribed excessive amounts of narcotics, including the morphine, which led to the deadly overdose, officials said.

Sadrinia’s Friday sentencing came after a federal jury convicted him last year of the narcotics distribution crimes, including prescribing controlled substances “resulting in death.”

The prosecution came after an investigation by the DEA and FBI.
