Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves today called a special session of the Legislature to approve what he called the single-largest capital investment in state history, which includes a $10 billion corporate investment to build data centers in Madison County.

The governor’s office says Amazon Web Services, Inc. will build multiple data center complexes in two Madison County industrial parks and create “at least 1,000 high-paying, high-tech jobs.”

AWS is described in a news release from Reeves’s office as, “the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud. These data centers will enable customers of all sizes and across all industries, such as healthcare, manufacturing, automotive, financial services, public sector, telecom, and more, to transform their businesses.

“Millions of customers—including the fastest-growing startups, largest enterprises, and leading government agencies—are using AWS to lower costs, become more agile and innovate faster. The new data centers will contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing.”

Infrastructure, job training and “site development” associated with the project will be partially funded through Mississippi Major Economic Impact Authority funds, the release adds.

Reeves joined a chorus of others lauding the project, saying, “Mississippi has done it again . . . Mississippi is building a business climate that is ripe for further growth, especially in the technology sector.”

Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Bill Cork echoed Reeves’s celebratory remarks, saying, “MDA is proud to have been instrumental in the successful culmination of this transformative $10 billion project. This monumental win underscores Mississippi’s attractiveness for major investments and signifies a boost to our economic landscape.”

Over just 12 years, AWS has invested nearly $110 billion in the U.S., the news release from Gov. Reeves’s office adds.

“Building on this, we are excited to expand our operations into Mississippi through this planned $10 billion investment, which will tap into the burgeoning tech sector across the state to create new, well-paying jobs and boost the state’s Gross Domestic Product each year,” AWS Economic Development Director Roger Wehner.

Corporate heads of Entergy Mississippi and AccelerateMS also expressed strong enthusiasm about the AWS data centers coming to Madison County.
