WASHINGTON, D.C. — Children, veterans, senior citizens and others trying to avoid homelessness will see increased support through a HUD voucher program.

HUD on Tuesday announced $30 billion for the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which helps people move into affordable living units.

The public housing authority vouchers help individuals and families achieve “stability” in their lives by having roofs over their heads, according to HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman.

They help more than 2 million families, including many children, veterans, disabled people and senior citizens, with housing needs.

The program’s funding has gone up by $4 billion in two years, keeping up with rising rent costs and improving access to “neighborhoods of opportunity,” according to the agency.

Providing people with housing vouchers helps free up income for other basic needs, improve educational outcomes and enhance wages, said Public and Indian Housing official Richard J. Monocchio.
