Reload? New Gun Safety Plan Modeled After Domestic Violence Laws, DOJ Says

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Law enforcement officials and others across the nation my soon get trained further on tips to keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The training will also be for “prosecutors, attorneys, judges, clinicians, victim service and social service providers, community organizations, and behavioral health professionals.”

It’s called the National Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) Resource Center.

It will aid officials in keeping guns away from people in the United States who may be a danger to themselves or others, a DOJ news release posted Saturday said.

The ERPO Center is modeled after domestic violence laws and creates a “civil process allowing law enforcement, family members (in most states), and medical professionals or other groups (in some states) to petition a court to temporarily prohibit someone at risk of harming themselves or others from purchasing and possessing firearms for the duration of the order.”
