Four U.S. military veterans from World War II to Vietnam moved into a new Minnesota veteran’s home Tuesday, Gov. Tim Walz said.

The Minnesota Veterans Home in Montevideo, which is in southeast Minnesota, is the second of three new veterans homes to open this year in Minnesota.

The skilled nursing facility will ultimately house 72 beds and can accommodate 24 veterans at this time.

The Preston Veterans Home admitted its first residents this month, and the Bemidji Veterans Home will open in the coming weeks.

“This is another measure of the state’s respect and dedication for those who’ve served their state and country,” Gov. Walz said in a news release.

World War II Veteran William Homan on Montevideo traveled to the state capital numerous times to advocate on behalf of veterans in need of housing.

“I can’t tell you what an honor it is to be the first Veteran to move in,” Homan said in the release. “This will really benefit Montevideo and the area for a long time.”

Minnesota is home to approximately 294,000 veterans.
